Does A Vasectomy Cause Lower Testosterone?

Vasectomy is generally a surgical procedure that is done for male sterilization. This method is opted for by those who want a permanent solution for preventing unwanted pregnancy. This surgery involves the cutting or sealing of the tubes that collect sperm from the testicles to pass to the urethra.

In this way, the mixing of sperm with the seminal fluid is prevented. After the procedure, when males ejaculate during intercourse, the seminal fluid will not contain sperm cells. They will continue to ejaculate, but they will never be able to impregnate their partner.

Effects of vasectomy on testosterone levels

The surgeon will remove the ducts, known as Vas deferens but it will not affect the testosterone levels. Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone. It has an essential role in the regulation of the sex drive (libido), the growth of muscle mass, and the health of sperm.

There is a lack of evidence that can confirm that the effects of vasectomy can lower the levels of testosterone in the body. Its level might not be impacted because of vasectomy, as it is just a hormone that is produced in the testicles.

Vasectomy is performed by cutting and sealing the vas deferens that take matured sperm to the urethra for ejaculation. The removal of these tubes will not influence testosterone production. The surgery will be performed only on the tubes without affecting the testicles.

Note that this surgery's effects can have a differing impact on every individual. This may depend on factors like age, lifestyle, overall health, etc. In case you are experiencing some symptoms of hormonal imbalances post-vasectomy, then it is necessary to see a health professional.

Does vasectomy contribute to hormonal imbalance?

Hormonal imbalances can happen due to various reasons. It is not evident whether a vasectomy can cause hormonal changes in males. Testosterone is the primary sex hormone in males. The decrease in its levels can affect their overall health.

There is a lack of evidence that can suggest that this surgery affects the hormone levels. The surgery does not affect the testicular function, which is to produce testosterone hormone. Hence, it is quite apparent that vasectomy does not reduce the levels of testosterone in the body.

Long-term side effects of vasectomy

This surgical procedure can cause certain long-term side effects. It is performed by making a small incision near the scrotum or under the penile. The long-term side effects of vasectomy include:

  • Post-Vasectomy Pain Syndrome – After the surgery, some men might continue to feel the pain around the scrotum or in the testicles. This chronic pain may remain for a long time.
  • This pain can be relieved with the help of medications and other treatments. For treatment, one must consult a healthcare professional.
  • Psychological problems – The thought of infertility and permanent birth control can trigger feelings of regret in the individual. This can affect their sexual satisfaction.
  • Sperm granuloma – At the site where the vas deferens were cut, a small lump is formed. It can cause discomfort. It is not harmful and tends to disappear on its own.
  • Vasectomy reversal – Once the vasectomy is done, some men might regret it. They may consider a reversal surgery. The success rates are quite low though.

This is why, it is necessary to decide to get a vasectomy wisely. Otherwise, the inability to give birth might bother the person after the surgery.

Does vasectomy affect your sex drive?

A vasectomy blocks the flow of sperm from the testicles to the urethra. The production of sperm will not be affected because of this procedure. Moreover, vasectomy does not affect the release of testosterone. As testosterone is the primary sex hormone in males, it regulates the sex drive (libido).

Vasectomy does not affect the testosterone levels, which ultimately means, it cannot impact the sex drive. Therefore, males may not experience any reduction in their sex drive or libido after vasectomy.

In addition, some studies have shown that a person can continue to have a fulfilling sex life after vasectomy. Some may even experience an improvement in their sexual activity.

To conclude

A vasectomy might not have any significant impact on the testosterone levels. It involves the cutting and sealing of the vas deferens to block the flow of sperm to the urethra. The surgery does not affect the testicles.

Vasectomy does not directly influence the function of the testicles. It might cause some discomfort after the surgery, but the testicles continue to function optimally. Therefore, it cannot directly impact testosterone production and its levels in the body.
